There is an old saying that "Customer is King." Well, I have come to realize that today's world of instant gratification, customer service is not always a priority. Sometimes, I have trouble getting a sales associate to make direct eye contact, let alone sing a cheerful "What can I do for you today?" So when I come across great customer service I feel obligated to acknowledge it.

Customer Service Appreciation Week is coming up October 1- October 7th and if you have staff that deals consistently with the public, I encourage you to recognize those star members of your team. The work they do on the front lines of your organization is crucial to your success. They are the face of your business and the impact they have on your buying public can make a significant impact on your bottom line.

Creativity Is WICKED!

This past weekend I saw the Broadway hit, WICKED with my sister here in Atlanta. It was AWESOME (I highly recommend that you treat yourself if it happens it make it to a venue near you)! I don’t know what I was expecting but the story is so incredibly creative, the music was fabulous and the acting superb. Of course, I glanced over at the promotional gifts on the way to my seat and noticed that those were equally creative with a great deal of care in the selection offered. The promotional apparel and accessories were eye catching; V-neck and burned out tees, BPA Free water bottles; everything practical and in line with current trends…but I digress.

What struck me most about this experience is the author and screenwriter’s ability to offer a completely new take on an idea already well established, that being the timeless classic The Wizard of Oz. This absolutely has business connections because it proves that just about any existing idea can be improved and expanded. So the next time, you need a new marketing idea, a unique gift for a client or a campaign to generate more leads, reach back into your arsenal and look at the gallery of successful ideas you have already implemented. Or, search the Internet to get ideas based on your end goal.

September is Self Improvement Month

Truth be told, I think Self Improvement Month is a bit of a misnomer. The whole "celebration" lends itself to the idea that there is something wrong with us and we need September to fix it! Well, I'm going to give you a little gift in honor of this month. Four basic principles that apply not only in gift giving, but in giving of oneself.

I challenge you to take a break from the self-help stuff (Dr. Phil, winning friends and influencing others, Oprah you've kept on DVD, etc) and instead try some of these activities:

BELIEVE. It's such a simple concept, but getting up everyday and believing that you can do anything, be anything is the best gift you can give yourself. If you believe anything is possible, you've already knocked down every obstacle you'll face each day.
Have FAITH. Unwavering faith in yourself, your higher power and your ideas and goals will set you up for a win every time.
TRUST. Trust your instincts. Go with your gut feeling. There are so many times I've heard myself say, "I should have went with my first mind", which means whatever my gut told me to do first is this thing I should have done; but I second-guessed myself which almost always leads to regret. Trust your own inner voice.
HOPE. Last, but certainly not least is hope. Hope is the great motivator. It gives you the courage to try new things, to get out of your own way and team up with people of similar ideals that will help you succeed. No matter what the situation, if you say to yourself, "there is always tomorrow" you've got a fighting chance.

Enjoy the month of September by giving yourself a break. It's okay not to be perfect; imperfect people believe in themselves, have faith that they will improve everyday, trust themselves to follow the right path (even when they stumble) and hope for a better tomorrow. In the words, of my favorite Saturday Night Live character, Stuart Smalley, I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and dog-gone it, people like me. I think that makes me okay.

Ancestry: The Gift of Legacy
I was tremendously blessed to have my great grandmother in my life until I was about 19 years old. My one regret is that I did not take the time to record her history, our history, so that it could be shared with future generations. I recently joined Ancestry.com to try to reclaim some of my family history; it's been fun (and a lot of work!) to do some of the research but I have been yielding interesting results. I can't wait to share them with my family during this holiday season.

I host First Monday, an evening networking event sponsored by an organization I belong to called Atlanta Women in Business. The philosophy of the group is broad, but at its core is the simple idea that "if we don't support one another, who will?" It is in this spirit, I share with you stories about a few stand out "diva-prenuers" I met during our session last night. I recently received an iPad as a gift (I know, great right?!!) and I'm hooked. While I have a smart phone (also addicting), I never really thought about apps and iTunes and whatnot until I received this jewel of a gift. Not only can I take by business anywhere (hugely cool for presentations, online catalogs, etc) but I'm dreaming of Angry Birds at night and having a blast!

Are You Still Cold Calling?

One of the most rewarding marketing strategies I offer my clients is the warm call gift. This is a great way to cuddle up to prospects before you make even one cold call. Warm-call gifts are inexpensive promotional gifts designed to showcase your company in a unique and clever way that will leave a lasting impression on your prospect.

Warm Call Marketing is also a great way to touch your customer when they give you referrals, after a presentation, or when you are trying to capture the attention of a prospect’s gatekeeper. The reception will be much warmer when you bring a clever low cost marketing gift and not just your business card and brochures.

This idea is also an excellent way to soften the often dreaded task of cold calling. Try sending your prospects a warm call gift a week or so prior to placing your call. Make sure the gift packaging stands out so it will be noticed in the pile of mailing coming into the company. Try dropping off your gift or sending it by courier or express mail (if your budget permits) as this will increase the chance that your message will be noticed and remembered more readily. This is a terrific way to introduce yourself without being intrusive and it should increase your chances of your cold call warming up. In cold calling, you’ll always get those “No Thank You” and “Not interested” responses, but with gift marketing your chances of increasing your conversion rate and grabbing that coveted appointment improves significantly.

Try to connect your marketing gift with the product or service you are selling. If this is difficult, a clever catch phrase and useful product will also win attention from your prospect. Keep in mind that your gift doesn't have to be expensive, it merely acts as a trigger; giving you a great excuse to call the client and capitalize on the bridge you’ve begun building with your initial contact.

Ah, love is the air! Valentine's Day is rapidly approaching but it's not just for lovers! We should remember our business contacts as well as they keep your business fires burning. Over the next several posts, I share my four basic lessons for hugging your customers that should add just a dash of L-O-V-E to your marketing:

Lesson #1: Remember the Power of Thank You

Quite often it takes nothing more than two simple words to make sure gratitude is properly expressed. Did you know according to a Emily Post etiquette survey that:

70% said e-mailing thank-you notes was appropriate, especially to acknowledge a small gift or gesture

Thank-you notes are mandatory and expected in some situations.

Nearly 15 percent of hiring managers would reject a job candidate who neglected to send a thank-you letter after the interview

32 percent said they would still consider the thankless prospect but that their opinion of him or her would diminish

Nearly a quarter (23 percent) of managers prefer handwritten thank-yous

21 percent seek a typed hard copy

19 percent want e-mailed thank-yous followed up with a snail-mailed letter

Whether we like to admit it, most of us have probably left a trade show and proudly showing off our new pens and trinkets to those unable to attend.

Sometimes it can be easy to dismiss these giveaway items as a waste of money.

However, the reality is that they do increase awareness of your company and entice attendees to your booth. They can effectively build goodwill, be an incentive, communicate a message, and create awareness.

The trick is making sure that you are giving away an item that your target audience wants and that produces your desired results. A little advanced planning and you can go beyond the traditional pens and stress toys to create lasting impact.

To help you get started, here are three quick tips for creating winning tradeshow premiums:

Know your target audience. Recently I attended a bridal tradeshow and had to decide on a giveaway. I wanted to give something that would have impact and creating a lasting memory for the brides visiting my booth. I choose hand-painted spring and summer chocolate flowers tied with imprinted ribbon featuring my company name and telephone number. It was a wonderful choice because it allowed the brides to see first hand some of the unique and creative favors I offer, it was visually stunning and generated several great sales leads! Choose a promotional gift that impacts your target audience and creates a memory.
Plan with the end in mind. What do you want to accomplish with your promotional gift? Tradeshow gifts should be designed to solicit an action, increase awareness about your business or communicate a message about your product or service. When choosing your gift, make sure it accomplishes one or more of these objectives.
Evaluate the outcome. After the show, evaluate the effectiveness of your gift. Did your customers find it useful? Did you get positive feedback or did they just throw it in the bag? Was it eye-catching so that visitors stopped at the booth? My chocolate flowers drew quite a crowd. Several brides came over to see them because they heard other attendees talking about them.

There are plenty of exciting trade show giveaways for you to choose from so avoid the giveaway doldrums of pens, pencils and key chains. Even a clever bag for attendees to hold their trade show loot is a good way to build your brand awareness. Well the holiday season is fast approaching (heck, it's here!) and while I'm sure you're busy building your business and getting ready for family gatherings, I wanted to remind you to thank your own valued clients, especially after a year like 2009!

Not only is holiday gift giving a way to show you're loyal customers and supporters how much you appreciate them but it does wonders for fostering long term relationships. Gift Marketing is a powerful brand builder, a great way to appreciate accounts both old and new and a terrific reason to "touch" your customer in the 4th quarter.

With everyone working on tight budgets, I've been asked "To whom should I give gifts this year?" I would like to offer a few suggestions:

Long-term clients who are continuously loyal and pay their invoices
Inside collaborators and "point people" in your client's organizations with whom you work closely on client projects (gate openers, referral friends, you get the idea),
Your accountant and other professionals who ensure you stay on the right side of the law and keep the IRS at bay

If you can't afford to give gifts to all of your clients, try segmenting out the ones that gave you the most business this year and give gifts to that list. At a minimum, I encourage you to send appreciation cards (send Thanksgiving cards to beat the holiday rush!) or email thank you notes to all of your clients, friends and family for their continued support! Hello, my name is Lynn and I am a Pashmina addict.

Actually, my problem (or passion depending on your perspective) extends to shawls, capes and coats in general. Recently, we were contacted by our new clients to come up with a custom take on our best selling "Welcome to Georgia" Gift Bundles.

What we came up with was a custom gift box in our client's corporate colors filled with our traditional Georgia treats; Coke Cola in the classic eight ounce glass bottle, Georgia made pralines, Georgia Peach Cookies and mints.

A Little Education Goes a Long Way...

If women don't help women in the workplace, who will?

Recently I had an opportunity to teach design and marketing classes during Gift Basket University at AmericasMart in Atlanta, Georgia. What a blast! Over two days dozens of men and women gathered to learn gift design and sales technique. Our classes covered everything from basic building to bow making to building an industry niche. I try to make my classes interactive as well as informative so that everyone takes away at least a few nuggets of wisdom.

I love helping women (and a few creatively inspired men) with design technique and marketing strategies that might help them grow their new or existing business. Occasionally, someone will ask me why I do this. Aren't I just training my competition, they chide? Well, I certainly don't think so. First, I strongly believe there is enough business out there for everyone with the drive and passion to pursue it. Second, I truly enjoy sharing my successes (as well as my mistakes) with other up and coming entrepreneurs!

I hope you enjoy these few photos of our class session. My students were intense, engaging, funny and enjoyable and I look forward to hearing about their successes in the months and years to come!

Food gift-giving is a trend that shows no signs of slowing, and innovative new products are helping retailers boost sales.

When shopping for gifts, many consumers are going for a more tasteful approach -- they're giving food.

Between 2004 and 2006, the latest period for which sales figures are available, edible gift sales increased 47 percent to almost $16 billion, according to "Food Gifting in the U.S.," a report from Rockville, Md.-based market research publisher Packaged Facts. Furthermore, sales are expected to grow another 45 percent by next year to more than $23 billion.

Granted, a full-fledged recession has occurred since 2006, but the case for continued food gift growth is a convincing one. "In recessionary times, specialty food purchases have been strong because they are viewed as affordable luxuries," notes Stephen F. Hall, CEO of consulting firm Food Marketing International, based in Tucson, Ariz.

While overall gift sales have decreased in recent years, food gift sales have accelerated. Consumer interest in food-giving is booming in part because of frustration with traditional gifting and the desire to give a gift that is unique, personal, indulgent, convenient, fun to share, and almost sure to please. In short, food gifts are a no-brainer for many shoppers.

A rising interest in gourmet, natural and organic, and other specialty foods is also fueling demand, and these kinds of food gifts not only mean premium pricing, but brand image enhancement and a profitable trial-use segment, which are all excellent reasons for manufacturers and retailers to feed the trend

Gifting is Good Business

Professor Frederick Webster of Dartmouth College was quoted in Marketing Management magazine saying, “Under the old marketing concept, the object was to make a sale. Under the new marketing concept, the objective is developing a customer relationship in which the sale is only the beginning. The customer is a long-term strategic business asset.”

I am certain this is true. Opening a new account is only the first step in building a long term business relationship. Caring about your client’s business as if it where your own is a key building block in business success.

My company was founded on the principal that thoughtful gifting, when used with other marketing strategy, is a key factor in winning customer loyalty. Gift giving is a way of expressing a feeling; appreciation, sympathy, congratulations, etc. It keeps a business relationship alive by showing clients how much we value them. Gifting is great because no matter what the gift, if given with sincerity, it has a high perceived value and long lasting impact. It also has the potential to generate new business and referrals. Relationships begin with a genuine care for the customer. People naturally respond more positively when they are educated, inspired or entertained; accomplish any of these things and you are well on your well to good business. Continue these concepts and you will create goodwill and dare I say it…priceless customer loyalty.

Now that we have established that gifting is good for business, where do we begin?

The best gift to give is a thoughtful one and one that relates to the project or person receiving the gift. If you’re new to how that translates into gifts that won’t offend, be construed as a bride or are just plain inappropriate, here a few gift guidelines to get you started:

Give gifts related to your project – this is the easiest way to give a gift. It’s as simple as a thank you note or a small token of appreciation after the project’s completion. You will give something that will be forever tied to that relationship. On larger projects for example, I also send my clients the same gift they are buying from me as my thank you. The client has an opportunity to see first hand the quality of their gift and I get an opportunity to thank them for the business.
Give a gift that fulfills a desire – why not give a round of golf to a client chatting endlessly during your lunch meeting about the great shot he/she made over the weekend. Their heart is clearly in the sport and they will appreciate not only the gift but that you were actually listening and cared about their experience.
Give a gift a client can use in daily activity – Giving a gift that will remind the client you are available for them every time they use it is a great way to stay top of mind. Desk and travel accessories are excellent examples of these kinds of gifts.
Give a gift they normally would not buy for themselves – a gourmet food gift is always an excellent choice since just about everyone eats! Flowers, candy and cookie bouquets are also excellent choices.

The most important reason to add gifting to your customer retention programs is its potential for providing added value to your clients in an entertaining, creative and potentially profitable way. Start your program slowly with your top tier clients (remember the 80-20 rule). Eventually, you’ll want to include those people who help keep your business running smoothly; the supplier who is always prepared for the rush order or the employee that comes to work everyday with a “can do” attitude.

MJ & Me: A Special Gift

He's out of my life and I don't know whether to laugh or cry...

It suddenly struck how much life I've lived already after hearing that Micheal Jackson had passed away. I grew up with Micheal, the entire Jackson clan really (although he's a full 9 years older than I am). Micheal, Prince and Madonna have often times been the soundtrack playing in my head as I have dreamed, cried, fought, loved and lost - each experience a gift of learning and an opportunity to be comforted by one of my great loves - music.

I remember my thrill of excitement (pardon the pun) receiving both the "Thriller" album and Lionel Richie's "Truly" album the same Christmas. I remember starting my very first fast food job and that next Christmas, buying my little sister (who's eight years younger) the Micheal Jackson doll (I'm sorry, action figure for my male readers), red Member's Only Jacket and sparkling glove included. She was so excited and I'd bought her something with my very own money.

I remember watching Motown's 25th Anniversary and seeing MJ Moonwalk across the stage, not having a clue that I was witnessing one of the greatest moments in pop culture. I just was disgusted with the fact that I was the only black kid on my block with no rhythm and a secret love for Air Supply.

I remember breaking up with my very first college boyfriend and the first thing I did was pop in a cassette to ease my broken heart listening to my favorite songs, including Lady in my Life and She's out of My Life (which I wanted to share with you), both by MJ.

For me, Micheal's genius is not only his musical gifts to the world but I felt as though they were his personal gifts to me. His uncanny ability to write a song that touches you, ties you forever to a memory (I know where I was the first time I heard "Bille Jean"), soothes your troubled soul or just makes you want to get up and dance (rhythm be damned).

Despite the media's coverage of both the genius and tragedy that is my childhood icon, what I will remember are these precious gifts of song he's leaving for me to enjoy for however long I have to live out my blessings. I guess my husband will be left with the task of teaching my little nephew and new baby cousins the Moonwalk.

I am certain at 90 years old (God willing), I 'll want to hear Off the Wall Album one more time. I'll be listening to his music forever.

The Pareto principle (also known as the 80-20 rule, the law of the vital few, and the principle of factor sparsity) states that, for many events, roughly 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes.

My discussion will address this principle as it applies to the marketing world (80% of your business growth can be attributed to 20% of your customer base). If you take the time identify and connect with your best existing clients, they’ll have your back in repeat business. Here are a couple of quick ways to manage this:

Send a thank you! A hand written note, a gift card redeemable for some kind of discount or free gift.
VIP Membership – make your customer feel special with a special mailing list that offers exclusive deals, a private sale, whatever your budget will allow.

Earn Repeat Business

Create custom promotions that will reward your customers for return visits. Offer gift cards or appointment reminders. My company offers a complimentary reminder service. Customer can send us a list of important dates and special occasions and we’ll send them a reminder at the designated time. We will even include gift suggestions from our website or exclusive specials.

Encourage Customers to Spend More!

Whether you sell tangible goods or viable services, you can bundle your offers in an effort to lure your customer a greater sale value benefits. Try offering upgrades or discounts for purchasing more than one item.

Attract New Customers

Customer referrals are essential to any business. Good news travels fast and can be key to winning new customers. Encourage customers to refer their friends and colleagues by adding a ‘send to a friend’ link on your website and in your email communications. Create a Refer a Friend discount card offering a discount for the customer and their friend and include them in all of your client communications.

The Gift Closet

I forgot one of my friends birthday this week. Me, the Gift Diva! It's tough to discover you are in fact mortal. Normally, I would not have forgotten a thing like that, but with my crazy schedule it just completely got away from me. Instead of having time to think of something wildly creative and unique, I had to turn to my trustworthy gift closet.

I come from a long line of gift closet gurus. I was blessed to have my great grandmother until was 18 years old and I remember a hall closet where she kept her bingo chips and extra gifts ready for any occasion. This was good, but my mother's closet is the hands down the most eclectic. She has a space in her hobby room now; but as a kid it was one of our downstairs closets. This is where her trinkets and tiny treasures were stored and at a moments notice she could whip out a gift for just about any occasion. The problem with (or interesting thing about--depending on your perspective) my mother's gift closet is that she keeps a plethora of odd items and curiosities pick up from clearance ranks and close out sales. At any given time you can find cat shaped trinket boxes, little fairy statues or a variety of small Makasa gifts ready to hand out to unsuspecting house guests and friends. Anyone caring enough to show up at our door with presents for her. This mainly happens during major holidays where reciprocal gift giving in our family is pretty much the unwritten rule.

Although this closet is filled with items sometimes screaming "re-gift" me! I love watching the joy she gets from adding things to it and how secure she feels knowing it is there. Her spirit of giving is what I think inspires me to improve my "divaness" in gift giving. There is nothing more special than making a person's day, cheering the sick, saying thank you or singing Happy Birthday to an unsuspecting visitor with a gift in hand. I think that closet taught me about the joys of always being prepared to give a little bit of myself.

Thanks Mom, another one of your great gifts to me.

KFC and Oprah: Obviously not an E-Harmony Match

As a gift and promotional diva as well as a born and bred Kentuckian, I find that must comment on the most recent promotional fiasco involving Kentucky Fried Chicken.

The concept of offering free meals to the public is not a new one. In what would have been a stroke of genius (had it been more carefully planned) the Chicken King enlisted the aid of Media Queen Oprah to help with this bit of marketing magic. Unless you've been living under a rock, you know that Oprah offered her viewers a coupon for a free meal (including drink!) for 36 hours on her website. In a email blast that can only be described as frenzied, my friends forwarded me the same link to the treasured prize. I mean it's free food right? I'd be crazy not to print this coupon and race immediately to my local KFC for the hook-up. I didn't. Instead, I decided to let the mayhem unfold and see what lessons could be learn from it. Well, only days into the promotion, the President of KFC posts a video on U-Tube explaining that due to overwhelming response, they would no longer be honoring said coupons. They had not anticipated the outcome of their own campaign. Really? It's O-P-R-AH for crying out loud! A few people actually watch her show religiously. When Oprah says, "tell your friends," well you just better believe that 3 million people were notified in 30 seconds or less.

The take away here is that "free" promotions can cost your company more money than they are worth if not planned effectively. My company runs contests and promotions all the time, but with an objective that will grow our business (increased mailing list, referrals, additional business, etc). We attempt to forecast the outcome so we can anticipate the need. I realize there is an unexpected element to any marketing strategy but I also suspect that using Oprah as part of the equation ups the ante.
